Flyday Fridays: Monastery Visit
Hi, all!
First, I wanna say that this is going to be a picture-heavy post so beware. ;) Second, I´m bringing you today to one of the most enchanting monasteries in Portugal, the Monastery of Sao Martinho de Tibaes, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1060 near the city of Braga. I wasn´t able to take an outside shot of the monastery building but it´s HUGE. It´s a labyrinth inside but I got out unscathed although a bit overwhelmed because of it´s sheer size, hahaha! Here´s what welcomed me in the cloister, a beautiful garden of peonies, roses, pink flowering plants and a very old fountain.
On one side is the ancient belfry and just look at the beautiful peonies below, aren´t they breathtaking? I went gaga when I saw the peonies. I thought peonies grow like roses(in bushes) but they´re like trees!
More pics of one of the cloister´s hallways with it´s geometric designed wood ceiling and the graceful columns and arches which lead to the garden. The church with it´s rococo designed in sculptures in gold is another masterpiece. It has beautiful chapels on each side of the aisle which are spectacular in itself.
Upstairs is another story. We found lots and lots of rooms where the monks once lived. The bigger rooms with salas belong to the abbot and higher ranking monks while the smaller rooms like in the hallways below belong to the regular monks.
There´s a halways which connects to the other side of the building and below that is this garden:
It´s so nice in here, you should come and see it! I was thanking the hubz over and over again for bringing me here. He´s not the flower nor bag or whatever giving type but he sure takes me to places which I only dream of. ;) Oh and by the way, part of the monastery is converted into a guesthouse or as they call it Hostal Convent and it even has a restaurant. It´s too bad that we´ve already eaten when we went there, we could have tried the what they had to offer. Maybe next time. :)
I hope you enjoyed reading this post. More to come about Portugal, don´t just get bored yet. In the meantime, have fun this weekend, y´all! :)
Warm hugs,
Che

I wonder how long it took to complete the whole Monastery? They paid so much attention to details, it's just amazing.
Have a great weekend!
