Flyday Fridays: Old Towns, Coastal Town

Warning: Picture heavy post. ;)

Happy first week of September y´all! This is a travel post and so beware of the the photo overload. ;) Now that we have that cleared, let me take you to Tui, a very old town in Galicia(Spain) which belongs to the province of Pontevedra. Here´s a view from the cathedral´s garden facing the mountains of Portugal.

2014-08-09 12.24.29

Tui´s Cathedral has a gothic design on the main vestibule/ frontal part. You can visit the church, museum, garden and go up for a bird´s eye view of the town and neighboring Portugal.

On the west vestibule( left side) of the church, it has a Romanesque influence. That´s a spectacular door, isn´t it? ;)

Next stop was La Guardia (A Guarda in Galician), the border town of Galicia before Portugal. We took this pic from the mountains which lead to an old celtic remains and a sanctuary.

2014-08-09 13.33.48

Up high on the mountains( you have to pay 1 euro to see this) is an archaeological site called Castro(Fort) de Santa Tecla( Santa Trega in Galician). It´s believed that this place was once inhabited by a Celtic tribe between 1st century BC and 1st century AD. This site was declared as a Cultural Heritage Site in Spain.

I can´t get enough of the swirling neolithic rocks which are the remains of what was once an ancient thriving village in this part of Spain.

This reconstructed hut is a replica of what coul´ve been their houses on those days and yes, I had to take a picture with it, hahaha! There´s also sancturay at the topmost of the mountain, a museum and two restaurants too but I wasn´t able to get some photos because it was foggy on top although I´m sure the view would be spectacular.

We went down instead and continued our journey (after having our lunch at hotel/restaurant  at the side of the road somewhere) towards Baiona, a famous coastal town in Galicia. It was founded in 140 BC and what I liked about this place is the ruins of it´s beloved castle the  Castle of Montereal. A very noteworthy fact about this town from my friend Wiki is this: On March 1, 1493, the Pinta, one of the ships from Columbus' voyage to discover the New World returned to Europe and arrived in Baiona, making the town's port the first to receive news of the discovery of America. A replica of the ship can be visited, and the event is celebrated every year. Interesting, no?

This is me and the beach and by now, my top´s one wrinkled mess from sitting down on the car for too long, hahaha! Hey, we´ve been travelling since early morning to late evening, what do you expect. :)

Finally capping off our day at Vigo´s Municipal Museum wearing the hubby´s hat this time. The museum has a beautiful art ( painting, ceramics, scultpture,etc) collection and a well manicured English garden. A perfect place to relax just before going back to Ourense, our home base for this trip. If this outfit looks familiar to you, it´s because I´ve already featured this in my WIWW post a few weeks ago. I hope you don´t mind! ;)

@Mili:

The towns that I visited still belong to Spain but they´re very near the Spanish-Portuguese border. ;)
